Two Years ago

 Two years ago, at the SCBWI Winter Conference I participated in a portfolio critique with "CB". 

CB said, "I would love to know what goes on inside the Popcorn House." 

Well, here you are Life got in the way and I had to take a pause, but I think it was worth the wait.

This is my first attempt at creating Paddington Bear

I think it took me from concept to finish about two or three weeks  and I was working on a couple of other illustrations at the same time while one dried I would work on a different one. I will post the other two illustration after the 2014 Tomie dePaola Awards is finished.   

 

size: 9 X 24 watercolor, pen & ink and finished in Photoshop 

What does the Bear say?

Since I am taking it slow this week I thought for fun I could show some of my process of creating an illustration.

 

It all started with sketch that I did during the 2014 SCBWI Winter Conference

 

 

  From that I did an ink sketch

 

 

 then I was playing with watercolor and came up with this

 

 

 

I went back to the original sketch scanned it and stretched it with Photoshop

also added some flowers

 

 

from that I re-inked part of the head

 

and I pencil it onto watercolor paper and came up with this

 

Was not a 100% happy so I scanned the darn thing and changed a few things around

until I got this  

 

 

So not sure if I am completely happy with this I may go back and redo it one or two more times. But for now I am going to leave it alone and work on something else
